Freezers live stream!

I am by myself again today as Kev is on the road for tomorrow's game in Krefeld. I have plenty to keep myself busy with because I need to get this apartment ready for the potluck I am hosting tomorrow for the rest of the girls. We will be having dinner here and then watching the boys game live, and you all can watch too!

Feeling truly settled!

Although it didn't take me too long to feel at home again in Hamburg and Kev was awesome with getting the apartment up and running, I am finally now feeling like we are done getting settled. Kev and I have, a pact I guess you could say, that we do not go to IKEA or home decorating stores without one another. They are just too awesome to do by ourselves! There are so many cheap options for tables, photos, candles, plants, etc. And trust me, when you don't know if you will be staying in the same home the next year, cheap is a must!

There were two rooms in our apartment that we were not sure what to do with but didn't love the way they were. For the first month I was here, the spare bedroom was used more as a storage closet than a Schlafzimmer (you all should have the privilege of learning German, too!). After the final home shopping trip, and some furniture movement, it feels and looks like a guest bedroom!!

Schlafzimmer
The kitchen was the other room that needed some major help. There was very little space for storage and the awkward table we had in it made it look tiny! It took an Ikea trip and 2 trips to another home store until we found the perfect cabinet unit (which is actually meant to be used as a bedroom dresser).

The living room and bedrooms were pretty easy to get situated and just took a few finishing touches. We love, love, love our apartment and area that we live in. Since we are living on the ground floor, we even have a small garden (now I just need a green thumb) complete with a grill. I am now completely reacquainted with the bus and train schedules which makes getting downtown and to German class so much easier (and cheaper when gas is 80 Euro a tank!). We have only had to drive one time to the grocery store since I've been here and there is even a local market that goes on in our square every Friday and Saturday.

It looked like Black Friday!

The photos above are what we saw just outside the Abercrombie and Fitch store in Paris last year. It fascinated Kev and I to no end at just why people would want to wait in line for so long to buy some overpriced, basic (in our minds) polos, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. For me, personally, I was over the Abercrombie/Hollister clothes a year or two into University. I never wore it much in high school anyway as my parents refused to pay for it. I'll admit that because the brands were "cool" then, I was pretty let down by this!

Hamburg opened their first Abercrombie downtown this past April, two days after Kev and I flew home for the summer months. After seeing the energy around the Paris store, I was very curious if it would be the same in Hamburg and was sad to miss seeing the opening. I've been in Hamburg's Abercrombie and Fitch once this year and didn't notice much of a fuss. Although, I did get a good chuckle as the welcome crew consisted of a shirtless male model. I know Abercrombie can strike up quite the controversy in the U.S., but after seeing Hamburg's store this weekend, it doesn't seem like the promiscuousness of the brand affects the European buyers!

The line outside Hamburg's Abercrombie and Fitch

My friend and I wanted to stroll by the store so my she could take a look (hopefully get a photo with the male model!!) and see just how luxurious it is inside. We never did go inside the Paris store with that line (however, after seeing the outside, I'm sure the inside is beautiful), but the interior of the Hamburg store is pretty extravagant with chandeliers and artistic murals on the walls. With both stores, I almost walked by them not realizing they were there because the buildings look too nice to house a store that I am familiar with seeing done so simply in every mall back home. It was actually the cologne smell outside the Paris store that made me realize we were there!

We had no intention of waiting in line, so we continued through downtown and to the indoor shopping complex. It wasn't more than a few seconds walking in that I looked up and said, "I wonder what that line is for!" What do you know, it was the Hamburg Hollister.

After seeing these lines at three different stores, I thought I would do some research into the topic. Besides, Abercrombie and Hollister aren't the only popular American brands in Europe. There are many, including Tommy Hilfiger, Gap, and Ralph Lauren. I read that the popularity of American brands began as a showcase of status (1). Status of having the ability to fly to New York and shop there. Now, it seems, with the younger generation, globalization is not such a big deal anymore and with the media, people are able to "cross the pond" daily and read the same books, watch the same TV shows. And it shocked me to find out that in 2009, Tommy Hilfiger actually had higher European revenues than in the U.S. (2). I suppose that it goes vice versa as well, with European brands from Chanel and Louis Vuitton to H&M being popular in the states.

I never would have thought that a spontaneous Saturday wandering around downtown would have turned into a bit of cultural education on brand globalization. Have a great start to your week and Tschüss!

Soggy, yet Bouncy

Kev left me early yesterday morning to bus with the team to Nürnberg for todays game. Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day so after running in the morning, a girlfriend and I headed downtown to enjoy the afternoon. We intended to grab a coffee, shop a little, walk around, and just hang out. Walking around downtown is a regular activity here on free days; I don't always write about it because I know you all would get sick of hearing it! But living here, I never get sick of spending an entire afternoon seeing this:

Or this:

Anyway, we started walking around intending to get a coffee when I remembered a shop from last year that has a drink called Bubble Tea. For those of you that have never had Bubble Tea, first and foremost, if there is a shop in your area, go try it! Delicious. Bubble Teas come from Taiwan originally and are served either as a fruit or milk tea. Yesterday, I had a Caramel Milk Tea. The tea itself is so tasty, but the unique thing about it is that they put a scoop of tapioca balls at the bottom of it. These little tapioca pearls are the weirdest things I have ever consumed. (I decided to change to their actual name, pearls, because I know balls will have all your dirty little minds running!)  Don't even try to drink through your straw hoping for only the tea because at least one of these little pearls manages to sneak through with every sip! My girlfriend and I were trying to find a way to describe them with words. We came up with "soggy on the outside, bouncy on the inside." What is bouncy? Try a Bubble Tea sometime and find out!

Downtown Hamburg was a sight to see on Saturday. The stores were so busy that we decided just to window shop and browse around. Street performers were everywhere and one in particular caught our attention.

We stood for a bit just questioning how these performers were giving the illusion of standing/sitting on thin air. We came to the conclusion that it has to do with the silver things they are holding on to and whatever is under that white sheet. Can you figure it out?

Happy Sunday! Tschüss!

The sweetest moments...

I missed the hockey game tonight due to work. The guys pulled off an exciting 4-2 win over Wolfsburg. Kev started the regular season off with an assist! I will update more tomorrow but want to leave you with the precious photo I captured with the kiddos after we got inside today.

And... we're back!

It's about time I started blogging again, don't ya think? It's already been over 2 weeks since I have made the move back to Hamburg. The adjustment was such a breeze this year, but I guess that is a huge perk of being able to come back to the same city!

Kev came over three weeks before I did and did a great job getting the apartment together. Other than unpacking my clothes and doing some cleaning, it was the easiest move I've ever done and our new apartment feels like home! We are incredibly happy we moved. We are now closer to the rink, the Scherenbergs, and only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the necessities. No joke. It is only a 3 minute walk for me to get to the bus stations, train station, grocery store, drug store, etc.

I can blame my lack of blogging a little on being busy. I went to see the Scherenbergs the day after I flew in and have been working since I got here. It was such a shock to see how much Hans and Ida have changed over 3 short months. Ida grew so much is now walking (or should I say running!) and Hans is a lot taller as well! I begin my German classes next week but am happy to say I have picked up right where I left off when it comes to the language.

Ida and I out for a walk
A festival was held downtown over the weekend in Hamburg. There is a great big lake in the middle of downtown and the "Alstervergnügen" was held along the entire perimeter of the water. I love outdoor festivals, anything that reminds me of Summerfest, Riverfest, or State and County fairs back home are good in my books! The Alstervergnügen had live music, drinks, every type of food one could imagine, a ferris wheel, children's activities, and more. We had dinner and spent the evening there on Thursday. We intended to wait for the fireworks over the water, but left about an hour before they shot them off.

I was able to see Kev play in his first home game yesterday. It was a very exciting game against Berlin which ended in our favor after a shootout. After the game, there was a fan party and autograph session complete with an AC/DC tribute band. Since the weather was beautiful, the party was able to be held outdoors.
Kev represented at the fan party!

The Freezers currently have a 3-2-1 record in the European Trophy and are standing at 3rd in their division. The European Trophy is a pre-season, Europe-wide tournament. Kev has left me home alone again as he travels to Finland today for a game against the Oulun Kärpät tomorrow. He has one final European Trophy game on Saturday and then the boys will begin to kick off regular season play. You can find European Trophy news and the live "ticker" for the games here. I have today off (of work and running!) so its a holiday for me like it is back home. Happy Labor Day and Tschüss!
